There are many theories among the fans regarding the identity of the Akatsuki leader. Many theories claim that the leader is actually an already known, often dead, character like Uchiha Shisui, the Yondaime Hokage or Uchiha Obito. Many joke of a conspiracy theory involving Mizuki, the harmless Umino Iruka, or more seriously, Yakushi Kabuto.
